Jan 16-Feb 28. A striking new exhibition of paintings of the River Thames by Nick Schlee, providing huge, vivid images of man’s attempts to cross its waters. (There will be talk by artist Nick Schlee on February 6, 11am, £6, Artists Talk - Painting Big). The exhibition focuses on the remains of the original Blackfriars railway bridge built in 1864 for the London Chatham and Dover Railway. The 23 large oil paintings include many diptychs, drawing the eye across the Grade II listed structures, a stark reminder of the former glory of a bridge that served London for over 120 years. The images portray the elegance and power of the river as it struggles to reclaim the remnants of this elegant Victorian structure.Schlee now lives and works in Upper Basildon.
